The effect of moisture on parquet

Wood humidity is influenced by the humidity of the subfloor, as well as the conditions in the surrounding area (temperature and air humidity). For laying wood, depending on the type, the parquet manufacturer determines the relative humidity of the subfloor on which the parquet or strip flooring can be laid, as well as the humidity of the wood. Pay attention to the relationship between the relative humidity of the room and the temperature, as well as their influence on the humidity of the wood.

20˚C, relative air humidity 50% – wood moisture 9%;

20˚C, relative air humidity 65% – moisture in wood increases to 12%

The change in wood moisture will occur in a shorter or longer time interval, depending on the wood structure, i.e. volume of space (the tube through which the wood was fed) in which water can be stored. Roughly speaking, when a piece of wood changes its humidity by 1%, it changes its dimension – width by 0.25% (indirectly, wood with greater strength is less susceptible to changes due to the influence of humidity in the surrounding area)

EXAMPLE:

OPTIMAL CLIMATE

Temperature: 20-22˚C
Relative humidity: 45-55%
Wood moisture: 9%

AIR CONDITIONING IN THE FACILITY

Temperature: 24˚C
Relative humidity: 70%
Wood moisture: 13%
4 x 0.25% = 1% => dimension 60mm becomes 60.6mm

4 factors are important for laying parquet:

9% wood moisture
45-55% relative humidity
Temperature
Cement screed moisture of 2%

Deviation in the value of any of the factors can lead to an issue and the price of the finished parquet is not a small position in furnishing the interior to be neglected.

The regulations mandate that the floor layer must measure all factors prior to laying the cladding and properly enter them in some sort of construction log.

The use of wood as a floor covering dates back to Roman times when hand-finished oak planks were used and the first installment of parquet flooring like today began in France during the reign of Louis XIV.
